Tilemap Calculator
Calculate the relationship between map size, tile size, and PPU.
What is the Tilemap Calculator?
This tool checks a Tilemap's grid and total tile count from tile size, map size, and tile count.
What is a Tilemap?
A Tilemap is a system for building a 2D map by arranging tiles in a grid. Arranging 32×32px tiles in a 64×32 grid gives a map of 2048×1024px.
How to Use
- Choose one of the three calculation modes.
- Enter the map, tile, and tile count fields shown.
- Optionally enter a PPU.
- Check the result and any remainder pixels, and copy it if needed.
Formula and Example
Splitting a 2048×1024px map into 32×32px tiles gives a 64×32 grid, 2048 tiles total. Building 100×50 tiles at 16×16px gives a 1600×800px map with 5000 tiles. Dividing 1000px by 32px gives 31 tiles with an 8px remainder, needing 32 tiles to fully cover it.
Using This in Game Development
Useful for Tilemap design, splitting a tileset, and checking camera bounds or overall stage size.
Using This in Unity
Useful for Unity Tilemap map design, splitting a tileset, and checking camera bounds or overall stage size. Tile size and PPU are separate concepts — setting 32px to 32 PPU gives 1 tile per Unit, while 64px gives 2 Units.
Tile Size and PPU
32×32 isn't an absolute standard. Choose it to match your art style and game design, and consider a PPU value that's easy to keep consistent across your project.
Notes
When a map doesn't divide evenly, the tile count that fits fully and the tile count needed to cover the whole map are shown separately. Enter tile counts and pixel values as whole numbers.
FAQ
Does 1000px divide evenly by 32px tiles?
No. It leaves 31 tiles with an 8px remainder, and covering it needs 32 tiles.
Are Tile Size and PPU the same?
No. Tile Size is the image's dimensions, and PPU is the number of pixels per 1 Unit in Unity.
How do I make 1 tile equal 1 Unit?
Setting the tile's pixel width and the PPU to the same value — for example, a 32px tile at 32 PPU — gives 1 Unit.
Which is better, 16×16 or 32×32?
Choose whichever fits your game's resolution, visual style, and ease of production.
