Animation FPS Calculator
Calculate the remaining value from any two of frame count, FPS, and duration.
Loops per second:
What is the Animation FPS Calculator?
This tool calculates the relationship between frame count, FPS, and duration to help tune sprite animation speed. It's useful for game developers designing Idle, Run, Attack, and other motions in 2D games and Unity.
What is FPS?
FPS is the number of frames shown per second. A higher number shows more images in a shorter time, but it can be set independently of your game's overall rendering FPS.
What is Frame Count?
The number of images that make up an animation. Playing 12 images at 12 FPS gives a duration of 12 ÷ 12 = 1 second.
How to Use
- Choose the calculation mode that matches the value you want.
- Enter the frame count, FPS, or duration into the two fields shown.
- Optionally choose an FPS preset.
- Press "Calculate" to see the result, and copy it if needed.
Example
Playing 12 frames at 8 FPS gives a duration of 1.50 seconds, with each frame lasting 125.00ms. Playing 8 frames in 0.5 seconds requires 16 FPS. At 12 FPS over 1.5 seconds, 18 frames are needed.
Using This in Game Development
Useful for deciding the playback speed of sprite animation such as Idle, Run, Attack, Unity Animation, pixel art, effects, and UI animation. 6–12 FPS suits a limited-frame look, 12–24 FPS gives relatively smooth 2D motion, and 24–30 FPS is smoother still — but the right choice depends on your art style and game design.
How Animations Differ by FPS
For the same frame count, a higher FPS means a shorter duration. A game can run at 60 FPS overall while still playing a character's sprite animation at 12 FPS.
Notes
Enter the frame count as a whole number, and FPS and duration as values greater than 0. When a frame count result comes out as a decimal, the main result is rounded and the exact value is also shown.
FAQ
How long does 12 frames at 12 FPS take?
12 ÷ 12 = 1 second.
What FPS plays 8 frames in 0.5 seconds?
8 ÷ 0.5 = 16 FPS.
If the game runs at 60 FPS, does the sprite too?
No. A game's rendering FPS and an animation's FPS are separate. You can play a 12 FPS sprite inside a 60 FPS game.
What FPS is recommended for pixel art?
6–12 FPS is common, but adjust it to match your art style, frame count, and intended motion.
