Aspect Ratio Calculator
Calculate the other dimension or the ratio of a resolution from a width, height, and aspect ratio.
What is the Aspect Ratio Calculator?
This tool calculates the other dimension of a screen or image from its aspect ratio and width or height. It's useful for deciding on game screen sizes, Unity's Game View, UI, screenshots, and video assets.
What is an Aspect Ratio?
An aspect ratio is the proportion between a screen's width and height. 16:9 represents a shape of 16 across to 9 down, and 1920×1080 and 2560×1440 share the same ratio.
How to Use
- Choose width-to-height, height-to-width, or resolution-to-ratio.
- Choose a ratio from the presets, or enter a custom ratio width and height.
- Enter the width, the height, or both for resolution mode.
- Press "Calculate" to see the result, and copy it if needed.
Example
Calculating 16:9 with a width of 1920px gives a height of 1080px. With 9:16 and a width of 1080px, the height is 1920px. Checking a 2560×1440 resolution with "Resolution → Ratio" gives 16:9.
Using This in Game Development
Useful when deciding a Unity Game View resolution, a PC game's screen ratio, Steam screenshot sizes, game UI layout, a mobile game's portrait screen, YouTube gameplay video, or sizes to support for ultrawide displays.
Common Game Screen Ratios
16:9 includes 1280×720 and 1920×1080. Resolutions commonly called 21:9 ultrawide include 2560×1080 (exact ratio 64:27) and 3440×1440 (exact ratio 43:18). 4:3 includes 1024×768, and 9:16 includes 720×1280. Check against your actual display environment.
Notes
Sizes are entered as whole numbers from 1 to 100,000px. If a calculation from width or height produces a decimal, the main result is rounded to a whole pixel. This tool does not auto-snap a ratio to the nearest preset — "Resolution → Ratio" shows the actual ratio reduced by its greatest common divisor.
FAQ
What is 16:9?
A ratio where width to height is 16 to 9. It's commonly used for PC game screens and video.
What's the aspect ratio of 1920×1080?
Dividing by the greatest common divisor, 120, gives 16:9.
Is 2560×1440 16:9?
Yes. Dividing by the greatest common divisor, 160, gives 16:9.
Is 3440×1440 16:9?
No. Dividing by the greatest common divisor, 80, gives 43:18. It's commonly called 21:9 ultrawide, but the exact ratio is 43:18.
Is 2560×1080 exactly 21:9?
No. Dividing by the greatest common divisor, 40, gives 64:27. It's commonly called 21:9, but the mathematically reduced ratio is 64:27.
