What is the Hex Grid Generator?
Generate a random hex (hexagonal) grid map with one click. Grass, forest, water, mountain, and desert terrain are placed randomly but cluster into readable regions, and you can export the map as a PNG image or JSON data.
How to Use
- Choose a map size (small, medium, or large).
- Click "Generate Map."
- Regenerate as many times as you like, then save the result as PNG or JSON.
Example
Generating with a "Medium (18×14)" map size produces 252 hex tiles, split into clustered regions of five terrain types: grass, forest, water, mountain, and desert.
Using This in Game Development
Useful for roughing out a 4X or strategy game's world map, prototyping a board-game-style map, or generating JSON data to load into your own map editor.
Notes
Every generated map is random. Terrain starts from a random placement, then gets smoothed so each tile tends to match its neighbors — giving a more readable, clustered look than plain random noise.
FAQ
Can I regenerate the same map again?
No. Every generation produces a new random map (seeded generation isn't supported).
What does the JSON data look like?
It's JSON containing the map's width and height, along with a 2D array of terrain names (the strings grass, forest, water, mountain, or desert). The coordinate system is flat-top hexagons using "odd-q" offset coordinates.
Can I change the terrain types?
Currently only these five are supported: grass, forest, water, mountain, and desert.
